From Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Alia Bhatt to Kalyani Priyadarshan's debut, here's everything about India's presence at Cannes 2026.
The Cannes Film Festival 2026 is shaping up to be a major moment for Indian cinema, with a strong mix of Bollywood celebrities, regional film representation and emerging filmmakers set to make their presence felt on the global stage.
The 79th edition of the festival will take place from May 12 to May 23 in Cannes, France, and India's participation this year appears broader and more diverse than ever before.
Bollywood stars set for Cannes appearances
Several major Indian celebrities are expected to attend this year's festival, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Alia Bhatt and Aditi Rao Hydari.
Aishwarya, who has long been one of India's most recognisable faces at Cannes, is once again expected to dominate red carpet conversations. Alia Bhatt's appearance also continues her growing international fashion and cinema presence.
The festival has increasingly become an important platform not just for film premieres, but also for showcasing India's expanding influence in global entertainment and fashion.
Regional cinema continues to gain momentum
One of the biggest talking points this year is the growing visibility of regional Indian cinema at Cannes.
Actor Kalyani Priyadarshan is set to make her Cannes debut on May 14, marking another milestone for South Indian cinema's international reach.
Speaking about the moment, Kalyani said, "Cannes has always been such an iconic celebration of cinema, so being there this year feels very special."
She also reflected on Indian cinema's increasing global recognition. "I think Indian cinema is being recognised globally in such an exciting way right now, especially with newer voices and stories finding their space. It's lovely to be part of that larger movement and experience a platform like Cannes at this stage of my journey," she shared.
The actor added that she wants to "enjoy the whole experience and go with the flow" without putting pressure on herself. Kalyani's recent fantasy-action film Lokah - Chapter One: Chandra has also received strong audience appreciation, further boosting her international visibility.
Monia Chokri named Camera d'Or jury president
Meanwhile, actress, filmmaker and screenwriter Monia Chokri has been appointed president of the prestigious Camera d'Or jury at Cannes 2026.
The Camera d'Or honours the best debut feature film across the festival's official selections, including Critics' Week and Directors' Fortnight.
Describing the emotional significance of first films, Chokri said, "A debut film is a dizzying experience, a defining moment when the soul seeks its form in images. It is a second birth- the awakening of the artist within. An act of truth, it exposes our fragility."
Chokri is known for films such as The Age of Darkness and Heartbeats. Her directorial debut A Brother's Love won the Jury Coup de Coeur prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2019.
She later directed Babysitter and The Nature of Love, the latter winning the César Award for Best Foreign Film.
Indian cinema's Cannes moment keeps expanding
Over the last few years, Cannes has increasingly become a major showcase for Indian storytelling beyond mainstream Hindi cinema.
From independent films and regional cinema to fashion representation and international collaborations, India's presence at the festival now reflects a much wider cinematic identity.
With established Bollywood stars, debut international appearances and growing recognition for regional voices, Cannes 2026 could mark another important chapter in India's expanding global cinema footprint.
