He has been writing for Collider for over two years, and has covered everything from Marvel to the Oscars, and Marvel at the Oscars. He also writes obsessively about the box office, charting the many hits and misses that are released weekly, and how their commercial performance shapes public perception. In his time at Collider, he has also helped drive diversity by writing stories about the multiple Indian film industries, with a goal to introduce audiences to a whole new world of cinema. Even the usually dependable Jason Statham can't push past the new hurdles that have emerged at the box office. For the last few years, the theatrical market has been a feast-or-famine zone, with movies either exceeding expectations or falling short of them. In fact, Statham surprised everybody with his non-IP action hit The Beekeeper, which grossed over $160 million worldwide a couple of years ago. He followed it up with another original winner, the action film A Working Man, which grossed nearly $100 million worldwide. In 2021, Statham reunited with his old friend, director Guy Ritchie, and delivered the $100 million-grossing hit Wrath of Man. However, none of that good luck seems to have rubbed off on Statham's most recent movie, Shelter. The film has had a disappointing run so far at the box office and seems poised to fall short of recovering its reported $50 million budget. In fact, the movie has only grossed half as much as Tom Hardy's biggest flop of the last decade.
Shelter grossed just $5.5 million in its opening weekend domestically, which is roughly a third of what The Beekeeper debuted with a couple of years ago. Even A Working Man made around $15 million in its domestic debut, although it experienced a steeper drop-off. Shelter has been outperformed on every day of its run by YouTuber Markiplier's self-funded, self-distributed horror film, Iron Lung, which is a highly unusual turn of events. To make matters more confusing, Shelter earned mostly positive reviews. It's now sitting at a 63% critics' score and an 87% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Classing up an overdone premise with professional execution, Shelter is highly derivative of previous Jason Statham action vehicles but lean and mean enough to forgive the recycled tropes."
Here's the Tom Hardy Movie That 'Shelter' Is Trailing
Statham's new movie was directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who, unfortunately, already has a big-budget flop to his name this year -- Gerard Butler's Greenland 2: Migration. The sci-fi sequel ended its run with around $20 million worldwide against a reported budget of $90 million. Statham's film, on the other hand, has made around $15 million worldwide so far. It's trailing Hardy's underwhelming crime drama The Bikeriders by around $20 million. Released in 2023, The Bikeriders featured a star-studded cast including Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Norman Reedus, Boyd Holbrook, and Mike Faist, among others. You can watch Shelter in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
