Despite being in the spotlight for over 35 years, fans of Snoop Dogg are baffled to learn the rapper and actor's real name, and the wholesome inspiration behind his stage name. It's not uncommon for celebrities to come up with a stage name they go by in the entertainment industry. While these names often are variations of their names or middle names, some take a more creative approach when coming up with the name they want to be known as.
This is especially common singers, as their names will become their brand and identity, while it also helps to keep their personal lives separate from their public persona.
One popular rapper and actor that decided to go by a stage name in his career in the entertainment industry is Snoop Dogg, who recently became one of the shareholders of Swansea City. And while he was going by 'Snoop Doggy Dogg', he soon shortened it to 'Snoop Dogg', which is what millions of fans across the world still knows him as, even 35 years into his career.
But some fans have been left baffled to learn the rapper's real name, as it took them almost three decades to figure out. This was the case for one person, who took to Reddit's 'Today I learned' forum to share their findings.
"TIL Snoop Dogg's real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. His "Snoop Dogg" nickname came from his mother who thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts," the headline of the post read, as they went on to link to the rapper's Wikipedia page.
Snoop Dogg has previously talked fondly about how his mum was the inspiration behind his rapper alter ego. Appearing on the Kelly Clarkson show, he was asked how it first came to be.
"How did you end up going by Snoop?" Kelly asked the rapper, wondering it it was true that the nickname started off as just 'Snoopy'.
"As a kid, I watched Charlie Brown, and I watched Snoopy so much, my mother was like 'you watch him so damn much, you're starting to look like him'," Snoopy revealed in the interview.
He went on to share: "And I swear to you, my whole life, I have had 50 years with my mother, and she never called me by my real name a day in her life. She called me Snoopy, Snoopy, Snoopy, that's it. That's all."
Snoop Dogg's mum, Beverly Tate, sadly died on October 24, 2021, at the age of 70, after a battle with an undisclosed illness. Snoop Dogg confirmed her passing on social media, describing her as an "angel" and later paying tribute to her during his performances.
Fans soon took to the comment section of the video to share their thoughts, as many praised his mum for the unique nickname.
"Even though this is the first time I'm hearing, about how Snoop Dogg got his stage name, and listening to his story I had a feeling that's how he'd gotten the name, because it makes sense," one viewer wrote.
Someone else said: "So cute he went with his mom's given nickname."
"I had NO IDEA that WHERE SNOOP DOG CAME FROM!!!!" another revealed, while a fourth person commented: "Awe love this. Momma snoop must be the cutest. super vibe Momma Snoop."
